Ad Hoc Committee for More Sustainable and Equitable Conferencing The work of the CIES Ad Hoc Committee on More Sustainable and Equal Conferencing is framed by several broader considerations relating to political, economic, and environmental factors that the Society and its members have grappled with over the years. These considerations include taking a stand on the travel ban instituted by the Trump administration in 2017, democratizing CIES conferencing and making it inclusive, continuing to explore the theme of Education for Sustainability introduced in 2019 and 2020 conferences, and responding to the current pandemic experience. Today more than ever, CIES has to adopt a more systematic approach to environmentally conscious and equity-driven practices, and implement concrete policies that would make the Society more sustainable and equitable. The Ad Hoc Committee is charged with providing strategic direction to the CIES Board in mobilizing the Society and its members to address the climate crisis and related geopolitical inequities. The Ad Hoc Committee will engage with the CIES Board and the broader membership to propose a concrete action plan that will include both mitigation strategies (e.g., reducing our carbon footprint) and adaptation strategies (e.g., ensuring we are resilient to crisis impacts by extending participation into the virtual space and other activities). Based on a series of public townhalls, individual consultations, and background research, the Ad Hoc Committee will propose concrete policies and strategies necessary to reconfigure our academic and professional engagements to make CIES - including its institutional culture, operations, and networks - more sustainable and equitable.
